From Announcement to Reality
Meta first teased this on June 29, 2026, opening a “reservation” window so people could stake a claim before the real feature arrived. That window didn’t stay theoretical for long. The rollout began reaching real users starting July 7, 2026, with the first wave live in Algeria, Azerbaijan, Ghana, Libya, and Nepal, a second wave following on July 20, and the rest of the world coming online through September 2026. In the US, users can now reserve and use a public handle instead of sharing their phone number, on the latest version of the app.
WhatsApp built this feature to hand its three billion users more say over who’s allowed to reach them a long-requested fix for a system that, until now, meant anyone with your digits could message you unprompted.
Why This Still Feels Like a Land Grab
Even with the feature live in some regions, most of the world hasn’t caught up yet — which means the breathing room isn’t gone. There’s a deliberate design choice at play here: usernames won’t show up in any searchable list, and the app won’t suggest or autofill them for anyone. In practice, a person has to already know your handle, word for word, before they can start a conversation with you. That’s a genuine privacy upgrade, but it also means the short, brandable, memorable handles people actually want are still up for grabs in most countries.
A handful of names are being held back for major public figures and organizations, but outside of that it really is whoever gets there first. The one hard rule to know: your chosen handle has to be unclaimed on Instagram and Facebook as well as WhatsApp — grab it in one place, and it’s effectively locked everywhere else.

- Businesses and creators: If you want consistency across Meta’s platforms, you can carry over your existing Facebook or Instagram handle as your WhatsApp username — but only if no one’s beaten you to it.

How to Claim Your Username (It Takes Seconds)
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version on Android or iOS — the feature won’t appear on outdated builds.
- Open Settings > Account > Username (also accessible via your Profile). Meta also provides a username generator if you’re stuck for ideas.
- Type your desired handle. Usernames run 3 to 35 characters, using only lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, and need at least one letter. They can’t open with “www.” or close with a domain ending like “.com,” since that could be mistaken for a website address.
- Check availability. If it’s free across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, it’s yours instantly.
- (Optional) Set a Username Key. This adds an extra 4-digit code that anyone messaging you for the first time must enter alongside your username — a second layer of protection on top of the handle itself.

You’ll still need a phone number to create and verify your WhatsApp account — usernames sit on top of that system, they don’t replace it.
